Fluoride ion is one of the most harmful environmental pollutants. Enlarged mechanized expansion
has led to the introduction of large quantities of fluoride ions into the environment, which causes
potential hazards to animals and human health through food chain. Elevated concentration can
cause dental, skeletal fluorosis and also non-skeletal problems. Research was done on
defluoridation by using different methods, widely used is the adsorption process. Dissimilar low
cost adsorbents were developed using a variety of raw materials. Utilization of suitable adsorbent
is the key for adsorption process. Different biosorbents were developed for the removal of fluoride.
This paper reviews the biosorbents used for fluoride removal.
Key words: Adsorption, Biosorbents, Removal of fluoride.
